Cyclists Conquer The Viking Challenge in Support of Redmile CE Primary School
On Sunday 5th October, more than 450 cyclists descended on Leicestershire’s beautiful Vale of Belvoir to take part in The Viking Challenge – Redmile CE Primary School’s annual fundraising event, now celebrating its 31st year.
Organised by a team of dedicated parent volunteers, this much-loved event has become one of the region’s most popular off-road cycling challenges.
“There are three gruelling routes to choose from – 70km, 60km and 30km – and they’re all as muddy as each other,” explains chief organiser Alexandra Wright. “This year, riders joined us from as far afield as Norway and Spain, along with plenty of familiar faces from across the East Midlands.”
One hundred per cent of the event’s profits are donated to good causes – including local charities who help run the event, such as Reach Learning Disability and Bottesford Scouts.
“Riders tell us they love the atmosphere – donning Viking horns and pigtails is optional but encouraged – as well as the four famous snack stops dotted around the trail,” continues Alex. “They’re met with pork pies, soup and free Belvoir Farm drinks, plus hundreds of home-baked cakes at the end of the ride. After cycling all that way, they’ve definitely earned it!”
Over the past 31 years, The Viking Challenge has raised more than half a million pounds for Redmile CE Primary School, part of Rise Multi Academy Trust. While this year’s total is yet to be announced, last year the school received an incredible £10,500 in donations, directly supporting pupils and enhancing learning experiences. These vital funds have supported enriching educational trips, hands-on learning experiences, and state-of-the-art school equipment. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of a committed group of volunteers and the generosity of sponsors and local supporters.
James Cope, Deputy Headteacher at Redmile CE Primary School, said:
“The unwavering support of our riders, volunteers, sponsors and local people is truly inspiring – and directly benefits the pupils of our small village school. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this event possible — from those who planned and prepared for months in advance, to the marshals, cake bakers, and clear-up crews who supported us on the day. The Viking Challenge is a true reflection of what we can achieve in our Redmile community.”
